Kammetal was founded in 2001 by Sam Kusack with the goal of serving the artistic, ornamental, and architectural metal fabrication industry. Sam attended The Cooper Union for his BFA in Sculpture, where he developed a passion for metal fabrication, and quickly picked up welding basics and explored fabrication techniques. After graduating from The Cooper Union in 2001, Sam began freelance welding and fabricating in his parents’ backyard, eventually moving his operation to a loft in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The Cooper Union recognized Sam’s talent for welding and would connect him with many local artists looking for furniture or sculpture fabrication. After establishing himself in the art world, architects began to take notice of his work and started contacting him for ornamental and structural work. Unable to continue working in his humble space, Sam moved the business to Red Hook, Brooklyn in 2007, and invested in large cutting, bending and forming machines. In 2008, his younger brother Alastair joined the team after completing his degree in Engineering and Applied Science at Caltech. Alastair began working with the company as an estimator, and eventually became vice president and business partner.
After outgrowing two different spaces in Red Hook, Sam once again moved the business to Naugatuck, Connecticut in 2018, while leaving a design office in New York. The beautiful new space in Naugatuck boasts 50,000 sqft with plenty of natural light and room for further growth.
In the last 17 years, Kammetal has expanded their range of fabrication capabilities, technical knowledge and industry experience. Kammetal has worked to develop and strengthen partnerships with equipment manufacturers, metal suppliers, and specialty sub-contractors. In turn, they offer a wide range of services and solutions to their clients.
